Baseado em um chip de 28 nm “Tahiti”, a Radeon R9 280x possui 2048 processadores stream com base no CoreNext arquitetura Graphics, 128 unidades de memória de textura (TMUs), 32 unidades de operações de varredura (ROPs), e uma grande interface de memória de 384-bit GDDR5 segurando 3 GB.
Velocidades de clock de referência da AMD para o chip é de 1 Ghz no core e 1500 MHz (6,00 GT / s efetivos) na memória, produzindo cerca de 288 GB / s de largura de banda de memória.
